VAPING OILS: GUIDE TO GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SESSIONS4th May 2019
Over the last few years vaping has experienced a surge in popularity, taking over head shops and online herbal retailers. With this surge in popularity has come an array of options and substrates for users to experience.
From e-cigarettes to fully customizable devices, finding the perfect vaporizer and oil can be a daunting task for someone that is new to wide world of vaping.
Maybe you have decided to quit smoking cigarettes, have decided to vape because of the numerous health benefits for medicinal use, or you’re just vaping oils for pleasure, whatever your reason may be, if you’re new to the vaping lifestyle or just not sure where to start, then this guide is for you!
THE VAPORIZER INDUSTRY
Would you believe us if we told you that in 2017 the vaporizer industry was worth a cool $9.5 billion and it’s still growing? By 2025 the industry could be worth $61.4 billion, but with all this growth also comes change. Being in such a high demand industry, many vaporizer brands are starting to outsource to other countries for production, and these mass-produced devices and oils can sometimes have poorer quality of construction and potency.
Worse yet, a cheaply-made device or poorly formulated oil can affect the quality of your sessions, and in some cases may be downright dangerous.
Here at Loto Labs, we assure you that our Loto Lux vaporizer is designed and assembled in California because we want to provide you with the ultimate vaping experience that is safe, potent, enjoyable and discrete.
MAXIMIZE YOUR VAPING EXPERIENCE
If you’re into vaping oils you’re likely doing so for the effect you can illicit. Whatever your herb of choice, from sticky green, to relaxing chamomile or jasmine infused concoctions, this guide will help you understand how to get the most out of your sessions. From using the proper device to better understanding oils and extracts, we’ve got you covered.
SET YOUR EXPECTATIONS
Before running out and buying a vaporizer and oil, it’s best to decide what you want out of your vaping experience.
Some questions to ask yourself include:
1. WHAT KIND OF INGREDIENTS WILL YOU BE VAPING?
For example, you may have some particular ingredients you’d like to have infused in your oil. Additional ingredients can enhance the flavor profile, or illicit a particular feeling such as relaxation (as with chamomile) or energy (as with ginseng or lemon zest).
2. WHAT TYPE OF “FEELING” OR “EXPERIENCE” ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Oils have a wide range of health benefits that can be useful to treat or alleviate the symptoms of many ailments. Are you looking for pain relief, reduced anxiety, relaxation, sleep aids, etc.? If you’re unsure which formula might be the best fit it’s always best to talk to the retailer or shop. Their specialists can often provide expert advice to meet your needs.
3. WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU AS IT RELATES TO THE DEVICE?
Not all devices are made to vape oils, but those that often differ greatly in style and function. Some things to consider include:
- Ohms / current
- Battery life
- Duration of your sessions
- And more…
While this guide may be about vaping oils, some of the other types of ingredients you may wish to try include dry herbs, wax concentrates, and e-liquids.
Deciding first what type(s) of ingredients you will be vaping is obviously important, as there are a variety of vapes for different ingredients. Some devices are multi-use, meaning they can vaporize more than one ingredient. As such, your first determination needs to be what kind of substrate you want to vaporize.
KNOW WHAT’S INSIDE YOUR DEVICE
No one is saying you should be a master of mechanics, but understanding the basic anatomy of your vaporizer is a good thing to know. Don’t worry there won’t be any quizzes at the end of this guide!
We just think you should know the inner workings of a vape before you buy one. After all, an informed consumer is a better consumer.
The anatomy of an oil vaporizer is much like any other vaporizer, generally consisting of major components including:
- A tank – used to hold your oil
- Battery – used to power up the device, atomizer and to heat the coil
- Atomizer – powered by the battery, the atomizer heats up the coil
- Coil – heated up by the atomizer, the coil is what heats the oil into a vaporized state
- Wick – used to provide a consistent and regulated feed of oil to the coil
- Mouthpiece – where you take a pull / drag from
That’s about it. The tank houses the oil and heating element (atomizer), which in turn houses the coil and wick. The coil is typically made from steel, titanium or copper. The wick from cotton or other fiber. The battery may also utilize a temperature control setting and typically range anywhere from 650mAh to 1500mAh in capacity (essentially denoting the time the battery will last between charges). Mouthpieces may be glass, metal or plastic depending on the quality of the build and can sometimes be swapped out at your discretion (depending on the make/model).
TYPES OF OIL VAPORIZERS
The best way (in our opinion) to get the most out of your vaping experience is by purchasing a decent device. Vape devices aren’t just used recreationally, but also for medicinal purposes as well. This movement towards vaping devices capable of vaping oils, concentrates, extracts and other herbals has resulted in the production of a higher quality of device (pun intended).
There is a broad range of vaporizers available in today’s market, but the three most popular types for vaping oils are:
- Cigalikes (E-cigs)
- Desktop Vapes
- Vape Pens
These are steadily the most popular vaporizers for oils and concentrates, and are both small and discreet. Don’t be fooled, while these vapes may be pocket size, they still hold plenty of power. Many vape pens produced today come with high-end, built-in batteries and also have temperature control settings. Vape pens are more convenient than a desktop device and definitely outperform cigalike vapes. Vape pens are available to use pretty much any ingredient you can think of.
As the name suggests, these vaporizers look like cigarettes. These devices are pretty basic and are usually a good starting point for people new to vaping due to their ease of use and budget friendly appeal. Cigalikes have a small battery and are usually disposable, lasting for about 500 pulls give or take. Some cigalikes have replaceable cartridges, but are typically not customizable.
These vaporizers are bulky, large in size, and are available in corded or cordless models. While their functionality is the same as portable vaporizers, these devices are obviously not as convenient (given their large size).
Desktop vapes typically don’t have a mouthpiece. Rather they employ a hose or a balloon to inhale the vapor from. The majority of desktop vapes are produced as a dry herb vaporizer, and not dedicated for oils. These desktop vapes use what is called a forced air method, and some will include a heating chamber that can vaporize oils and other concentrates. Two of the most popular desktop vaporizers that you might have heard of are the “Volcano” and the “Herbalizer”.
Our personal favorite, however, happens to be the Loto Legend, an incredible vaping device for concentrates like shatter, badder, wax, and more.
The battery life of a vaporizer is another factor that can either increase or decrease your vaping satisfaction. As we’ve learned, not all vapes are built alike, so when buying your first vaporizer check out the battery size and how long it should last between charges.
The battery life of your vaporizer will also depend on how frequently you use the device, and how long each of your vaping sessions are. Some vaporizers have removable batteries so you can upgrade them or have multiple batteries so that you can swap them out as one needs charging.
Oils and other extracts are typically quite potent, so you may find that you use your oil vape device less often than you do your e-juice device. As such, you can often get away with smaller, discreet vape devices for your oil even if you sacrifice battery life.
TYPES OF OILS
When people think of vaping oils, they tend to think of just concentrates and extracts used for either recreational or medicinal purposes. But did you know that you can also vape essential oils? Yes we’re talking about lavender, chamomile, peppermint, and the like. Some of the major benefits of vaping essential oils include aromatherapy, and calming and soothing effects.
When it comes to oils, we could write a whole book. New strains and formulas are coming out daily, each designed to provide a specific type of experience at varying levels of strength and flavoring. The type of oil you choose to vape will largely be a personal decision based on your needs. We suggest trying and experimenting with a range of options to find the one best suited for your tastes. As they say, variety is indeed the spice of life.
ADDITIONAL TIPS AND TRICKS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR EXPERIENCE:
Below are some of our tips and tricks to make your oil vaping experience more enjoyable!
High-quality product – Like a fine wine, having a high quality concentrate can and does make all the difference.
Regardless of whether you’re vaping essential, herbal or medicinal oils, you always want to be vaping the best oil possible. But this doesn’t mean you need to break the bank. High-quality oils can be found at fair prices all around the web. Look for products made in the USA, organic, and tested for potency and purity.
Temperature – remember, your goal is to vape oil here, not burn it! If the temperature is too high while you vape, then you’re most likely burning away perfectly good oil and also inhaling carbon monoxide…yuck! Investing in a vaporizer that has temperature control built in will allow you to truly optimize your vaping experience based upon preference, flavor and oils.
Go easy there – with any new oil that you’re trying, we suggest starting out with small doses. If you’re vaping oil concentrates or extracts and don’t employ moderation, the effects may be a little stronger than you were hoping for. It’s always easier to add more, especially when you don’t know how potent an oil is or how your body will react.
Puffs matter – small, controlled puffs are best for many reasons, but most importantly, small puffs insure evaporation of your oils in the chamber versus combustion. When inhaling, deeper is typically better, but that doesn’t mean you need to take a long pull. And as with combustible herbs, holding the vapor in before exhaling is always good practice.
BENEFITS OF VAPING OIL
Studies show that vaping is about 95% safer than smoking, and further research has shown that vaping can actually have many health benefits for people that partake for medicinal purposes. Medicinal oils are extracted from herbs and help treat patients that suffer from a number of chronic and/or acute conditions.
Below are just some of the many conditions that may benefit from vaping:
- Anxiety Disorders
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinson’s Disease
WHY VAPING IS OVERTAKING SMOKING
The vaping industry has steadily expanded for various reasons but the most popular being nicotine withdrawal and medicinal use. Also, with the rise in the legalization of herbs across the country, it’s also no wonder why recreational vaping is growing at such a breakneck pace. Vaping oils – no matter what kind, is a pleasurable experience, and offers a cleaner, better tasting, and more potent delivery than its traditional combustible counterparts.
